Handwriting Programmes
Handwriting is about far more than pen and paper. For many children and young people, the challenges behind the page, with coordination, posture, muscle tone, sensory processing, or motor planning, are what make writing feel so hard.
Our handwriting programme is designed by Specialist Occupational Therapists who understand the underlying reasons why a child or young person struggles, not just the symptoms on the page, and work on building the foundational skills that make fluent, functional handwriting possible.
Who The Programme is For
-
Children and young people aged approximately 5 to 14 who struggle with pencil control, letter formation, handwriting speed, or the physical effort of writing.
-
Children and young people whose handwriting difficulties are affecting their school performance, confidence, or enjoyment of learning.
-
Children and young people with DCD/dyspraxia, fine motor delays, or sensory processing differences that impact their grip, hand function, or ability to sustain writing over time.
-
Children and young people who have been told to "just practise more", but for whom more practice alone has not made a difference.
-
Children and young people who avoid writing tasks, rush to finish, produce work that doesn't reflect their true ability, or experience pain or fatigue when writing.
-
Families or schools who want to understand the root cause of a child/young person's handwriting difficulties, not just address the surface symptoms.
Our Approach
-
A thorough Occupational Therapy Assessment to identify the underlying reasons for your child/young person's handwriting difficulty; whether that is motor planning, sensory processing, muscle tone, posture, or a combination, before any intervention begins.
-
Evidence-based programmes, selected and tailored to each child/young person's specific profile rather than applied as a one-size-fits-all solution.
-
Targeted work on the building blocks of good handwriting: grip, posture, letter formation, spacing, and speed, addressed in the order and combination that is right for your child/young person.
-
Practical home practice programmes designed to consolidate progress between sessions.
-
Clear, actionable recommendations for school, giving teachers and teaching assistants the tools they need to support your child/young person in the classroom every day.
-
Regular review to track progress, adapt the programme, and ensure your child/young person is moving forward.
Working With Schools
-
We liaise directly with class teachers and SENCOs, communicating directly to ensure that what happens in the clinic is reflected and reinforced in the classroom.
-
Children and young people participating in our handwriting programme receive written recommendations for in-class support and practical adaptations written appropriately for educators.
-
Where helpful, our therapists can observe a child/young person writing within their actual school environment, providing insights that a clinic setting alone cannot capture.
-
School visits are available on request, and can be particularly valuable where a child/young person writes very differently at school than they do at home or in clinic.
